Square Foot Gardening Update #9--May 22nd

The garden is getting more fun--

I've staked the peas--because laying them down was not working--

Next time I'll put the peas in a different place.

How big does the lettuce need to get exactly?

I have to keep telling myself that this is the first year of my garden and I should not be disappointed if everything does not thrive.  I already had to pull out the spinach plants because it was just too hot.  I know now that next year we will do seedlings inside (and hide them from the cats).

Some of my plants seem to be the same size, week after week...however, they were transplants from the farmer's market.

Is is normal to have some brown leaves on some of your plants?

The best part is that I am learning a lot and loving reading about other gardens.  It's such a treat!  It's so fun to have a new hobby that will benefit my family's heath--and I enjoy doing it.

What things have you learned?

  1. I've learned that termites like to eat Jalapeno pepper plant seedlings. That flea beetles love Eggplants. That I need to start lettuces and spinach in February and October. That I'm not very patient when it comes to gardening, but gardening is helping me become more patient :) We finally have blooms on our tomato plants, pop over and see :)

  2. Your peas are really coming along! My lettuces are growing at a very slow pace, but I have blamed that on the cold weather.

  3. Your peas look terrific! I've never found THE best support for them. I think no matter what I use it's kind of a messy clean up job when we pull them out. Those tendrils wrap around everything! :)

  4. It's our first year gardening too. We learned that birds really like strawberries and raspberries, that my husband was wrong and just covering grass with dirt will not kill it, and that a only a few plants won't produce much of a yield. But we're enjoying doing this and will for sure do it again.
